This Week, Part 2 (Oct. 30-Nov. 1, 2015)

Because of embargoes, a lot of our critics aren’t able to share links with you until release day. Here are some last-minute reviews for this weekend’s upcoming films. We’ve kept in all the reviews posted yesterday as well so you can have more help in deciding what to see (if you haven’t already).

Our critics have been hard at work reviewing the latest films. Here is a look at what’s coming out this weekend (in select cities, check your local listings) and what else may be in theaters right now.

Opening: Oct. 30-Nov. 1, 2015

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse

[New Today] Mark Dujsik @ Mark Reviews Movies

  • Excerpt: One must grudgingly admit that the movie knows exactly what it wants to be …It’s just that it’s a bland, anonymous, and crude state of being.

[New Today] Courtney Howard @ FreshFiction.tv

  • Excerpt: Wanting badly to be as smart, charming and genuinely funny as SHAUN OF THE DEAD and ZOMBIELAND, the raunch-zom-com falls far short of a film with any modicum of brains.

[New Today] Brent McKnight @ The Last Thing I See
[New Today] Kristy Puchko @ Pajiba

  • Excerpt: Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse feels like an artifact. If you found a dust-covered VHS tape of it in your parents’ garage, you might chuckle at its sophomoric brand of humor and cringe-inducing sensibilities for being a product of their time. But as a new release, the only thing shocking about it is that it was made in the past decade.

All Things Must Pass

Jared Mobarak @ The Film Stage

  • Excerpt: All Things Must Pass is therefore as much about the rise and fall of the music industry moving from vinyl to digital as it is Russ Solomon’s legacy. The latter is unblemished in the aftermath as he stayed true to himself and employees until financial troubles and wide eyes took their toll.

The Assassin

Laura Clifford @ Reeling Reviews

  • Excerpt: features scene after scene of heart stopping beauty, all set to one of the year’s most inventively evolving scores…It’s all simply glorious.

[New Today] Mark Dujsik @ Mark Reviews Movies

  • Excerpt: This is less a narrative than it is a pageant.

[New Today] Charlie Juhl @ Citizen Charlie

  • Excerpt: An assassin with a heart of gold, balancing work vs. love, The Assassin is an opportunity for a certain cinephile sect to relish color-saturated art direction and ignore narrative, because trying to understand any of it is futile.

Julia

Nicholas Bell @ Ioncinema
Glenn Lovell @ CinemaDope.com

  • Excerpt: … studied and stylish — in a very self-conscious way. We’ve seen it all before, in ‘Ms .45,’ ‘Basic Instinct’ and other feminist revenge fantasies.

Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet

[New Today] Jared Mobarak @ BuffaloVibe

  • Excerpt: I’m partial to Moore and Plympton for no other reason than being familiar with their work, but Sfar’s hyper real tango, Harib’s soft watercolor, and Socha’s surrealistic grain are standouts too. Compiling them together is the perfect way to bring Gibran’s words to life—attractive images for otherwise sententious content.

The Russian Woodpecker

David Bax @ Battleship Pretension

  • Excerpt: Gracia can’t decide between a straight-faced, informational approach or a more fantastical one that matches the personality of his human subject as well as the Soviet thinking that led to the Woodpecker in the first place. As a result, the film never gels, leaving the audience to do little more than shrug when they should want to run and tell their friends about this fascinating, massive thing known as the Russian Woodpecker.

Spectre

Rob Daniel @ Electric Shadows

  • Excerpt: Ultimately what carries Spectre is Daniel Craig

MaryAnn Johanson @ FlickFilosopher.com

  • Excerpt: After a truly spectacular and fresh opening sequence, everyone might as well be enacting a Bond puppet show, which is sometimes unpleasantly retro-icky.

Darren Mooney @ the m0vie blog

  • Excerpt: His word is his Bond.
