This Week at the Movies, Part 2 (Jul. 18-20, 2014)

Because of embargoes (those happy little restrictions on when critics can post reviews, good or bad), a lot of our critics aren’t able to share links with you until release day. Here are some last-minute reviews for this weekend’s upcoming films. We’ve kept in all the reviews posted yesterday as well so you can have more help in deciding what to see (if you haven’t already).

Our critics have been hard at work reviewing the latest films. Here is a look at what’s coming out this weekend (in select cities, check your local listings) and what else may be in theaters right now.

The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared

Diego Salgado @ Guía del Ocio [Spanish]

Antarctica: A Year on Ice

Andrew Wyatt @ St. Louis Magazine

  • Excerpt: Powell’s picture is the ultimate insider’s journal, intent on expressing the “Antarctic life” as it is actually lived.

Dancing Arabs

[New Today] Kevin Carr @ 7M Pictures

  • Excerpt: “Dancing Arabs” shows that the victims of the conflict are not only those killed in the battlefield, but people whose spirits can be crushed by circumstance.

Días de vinilo

Samuel Castro @ Ochoymedio.info [Spanish]

  • Excerpt: Cuatro amigos en Buenos Aires, relacionados con la música, intentan sobrevivir a la crisis de la mediana edad.

Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalam

[New Today] Kevin Carr @ 7M Pictures

  • Excerpt: Often compared to “A Separation,” both by the audience and the filmmakers themselves, “Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalam” is a more intimate drama as well as a harsher one. We see a woman imprisoned in her own marriage, and even though there is no direct reason why she needs the divorce (like adultery or abuse), she is unable to have her own goals realized.

Hungry Ghost Ritual

James Marsh @ Twitch

  • Excerpt: Nick Cheung follows a string of critical and commercial hits with his debut as writer-director, a seasonal horror flick in which he also takes the leading role. While Cheung has a keen eye for detail when it comes to the traditions associated with the Hungry Ghost Festival, his scripting is flimsy and cliched while his direction lacks atmosphere or genuine chills.

Red Leaves

[New Today] Kevin Carr @ 7M Pictures

  • Excerpt: Like any culture that faces changing values over generations (which is to say, all of them), “Red Leaves” gives you a chance to examine your own prejudices by stepping outside of your life and into a different one.
