This Week at the Movies, Part 1 (Feb. 15-17, 2013)

Because of embargoes (those happy little restrictions on when critics can post reviews, good or bad), a lot of our critics aren’t able to share links with you until release day. Here are some last-minute reviews for this weekend’s upcoming films. We’ve kept in all the reviews posted yesterday as well so you can have more help in deciding what to see (if you haven’t already).

Our critics have been hard at work reviewing the latest films. Here is a look at what’s coming out this weekend (in select cities, check your local listings) and what else may be in theaters right now.

Opening: February 15, 2013

2013 Films Not Yet In Theaters

ABCD (Any Body Can Dance)

Kathy Gibson @ Access Bollywood

About Face: Supermodels Then and Now

Jennie Kermode @ Eye For Film

Beauty is Embarrassing: The Wayne White Story

Jamie S. Rich @ DVD Talk

  • Excerpt: Life is a performance for Wayne White, the universe is one big art prank, and this movie is one of the most pleasantly enjoyable documentaries about the creative process I’ve seen in a good long while.

Breakfast with Curtis

Jennie Kermode @ Eye For Film

Business as Case

Vadym Grygoriev @ kinoblog.com [Ukrainian]

The Deflowering of Eva Van End

Jennie Kermode @ Eye For Film

Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey

Cole Smithey @ ColeSmithey.com

  • Excerpt: Whether or not you are a fan of Journey’s music, Ramona S. Diaz’s uplifting documentary about Arnel Pineda’s rise from an impoverished Philippian youth to becoming the lead singer for a hugely successful rock band, will charm you.

The Factory

Luke Bonanno @ DVDizzy.com

  • Excerpt: The Factory seems to have the ingredients for a passable atmospheric mystery, but more interested in the serial killer than the cops looking for him, it opts to be a bleak tale of torture and torment with an absurdly unsatisfying twist ending.

The Happy Lands

Jennie Kermode @ Eye For Film

Lovelace

Jason Bailey @ The Atlantic

  • Excerpt: . Its view of her is so cursory, so focused on sculpting her into a boilerplate Biographical Drama Protagonist, that Lovelace achieves the impossible: It makes Linda Lovelace’s story boring.

Le Prix des mots

Mathieu Li-Goyette @ Panorama-cinéma [French]

Teddy Bear

Peter Gutierrez @ Unseen Films

  • Excerpt: I’m an American caught up in a tale about Danes and Thais. If love is indeed universal, this film is Exhibit A.

Top Gun (IMAX)

Jerry Roberts @ Armchair Cinema

  • Excerpt: Here in one noisy little package is 80s popcorn entertainment in its purest form refitted into a 3D process that it was never intended to for.
