  1. Dear Ms. Chase,

We hope this message finds you doing well. We are two seventh graders, Nandini Jhaveri and Tarani Kalagara and we both attend Kenyon Woods Middle School in South Elgin, Illinois. We are doing a Genius Hour argumentative project for our Language Arts class which allows us to research a topic of our choice and express our viewpoint on that topic. We have chosen film critics/cinema and we are arguing whether film critics are still relevant or not. We decided to consult an expert for the topic and we think you would be a great person to help us with our questions considering you are a film critic and have had experience working in this field. It would be a great help if you could take some time and answer our questions. The information we will receive from you will be a big boost to our project.

The following is a list of our questions. It would be amazing if you could answer even a few.

How do film critics evaluate/rate the movies that they watch?
How can you tell that the reviews are not biased?
Do critics collect information and take notes during the movie or do they try to remember all the details after? If they do it during the movie doesn’t that affect their attention? If they do it after, isn’t there a chance that the whole effect of the movie is gone?
Are their certain factors that automatically make critics give bad reviews such as too many songs?
Do you know if critics’ reviews play into decisions about awards such as Oscars?
Do you believe that the advice of professional film critics should be taken before watching a movie?
Do you think that too many people just look at the numbers (such as how many stars the film is rated, the percent of people who like the film, etc.), or people actually read the written parts?

Thank you so much for reading this message. We hope to hear back from you soon and we appreciate the work that you and other film critics do.
    Nandini Jhaveri and Tarani Kalagara
